A site risk assessment for our fishing-based Alternative Provision, covering lakeside fishing areas and indoor classroom/welfare space. Overall risk rating: Medium.

Staffing & supervision

  • Sessions are delivered by experienced staff and/or Angling Trust qualified coaches.
  • A Lone Working Policy is in place; lone-working arrangements are risk assessed and reviewed regularly.
  • Staff carry a mobile phone and have access to emergency contact details at all times.
  • Dynamic risk assessments are completed throughout sessions.

Key hazards & controls

Water / lake edge (Medium)

Learners are supervised at all times near water; boundaries and expectations are explained at the start; running near water is not permitted; safe fishing pegs are selected and visibility maintained.

Hooks, sharp equipment & casting (Medium)

Equipment handled under supervision with guidance on safe casting, unhooking and handling; safe casting areas and managed peg spacing; first aid equipment on site.

Weather, sun, cold & hydration (Medium)

Conditions monitored before and during sessions; suitable clothing and fluids advised; regular breaks, shade and indoor areas used; sessions adapted or cancelled if unsafe.

Review

This risk assessment is reviewed termly; following any accident, incident or near miss; where learner needs, activities or staffing change; where weather conditions require it; and following safeguarding concerns.
